Title:
The Internet - The Rough Guide

Review:
I first encountered this book when I bought an
earlier edition of what has since become one of the classic
internet 'bibles'. What struck me about the earlier edition - the
wealth of information, detailed coverage of practical issues,
comprehensive glossary of internet terms, extensive internet site
directory, etc. - is still true of the current edition. The latest
edition has become (if anything) an even more focused and
practical book for those wanting to know more about all things
Internet.
For the novice (or more experienced user) the
author provides step by step explanations and illustrations of
many of the more essential issues and practises other guides shy
away from. Included are such details as how to set up your PC for
connection to the Net, choosing from the range of available
browsers (yes you do have a choice!), picking and making use of
email software, subscribing to newsgroups, using and choosing FTP
programs, etc.
For the interested reader, the book provides a
number of clear advantages to many of the densely written 'how to'
internet guides currently available. These include the author's
no-nonsense writing style, which succeeds in making complex
subjects easily understood. A wide range of subjects are explored,
and all are discussed in plain language without patronising those
new to the subject.
Anyone interested in the Internet -
particularly those recently encouraged on to the it by the range
of 'free' service providers now available, are sure to find The
Internet Rough Guide an indispensable and practical guide.
Notwithstanding its size (a pocket guide that actually does fit
the pocket!) this portable and affordable (at five pounds) book
contains enough information to justify its place on many Free Pint
reader's reference shelves.

"This is indeed a very good book. My only suggestion: There is now a 2000 guide, and it is just as good (but a bit more current of course)." Rex Basham
